On November 3, 2017, Magnum Photos announced the winners of the 2017 Magnum Photography Awards. The awards, now in their third year, recognize the best in contemporary photography from around the world.
This year’s jury, chaired by Susan Meiselas, included Aida Muluneh, Alessandra Sanguinetti, Alec Soth, and photographers David Alan Harvey and Lorenzo Benedetti.
The winners of the 2017 Magnum Photography Awards are:
First prize: “The Address” by Alessandra Sanguinetti
Second prize: “The Dandelion Clock” by Lorenzo Benedetti
Third prize: “Distant Neighbors” by Alessandra Sanguinetti
Alessandra Sanguinetti was also awarded the Richard Avedon Award for Creative Excellence.
The Address, a portrait of a man living in a homeless encampment in San Francisco, was praised by the jury for its “poetic and compassionate look at the human condition.”
Lorenzo Benedetti’s The Dandelion Clock, a photograph of a dandelion seed head taken in extreme close-up, was described by the jury as “a beautiful and poetic meditation on the power of time and transformation.”
Distant Neighbors, a series of portraits of refugees living in a camp in Greece, was praised by the jury for its “powerful and humane portraits of people who have lost everything.”
The winners of the 2017 Magnum Photography Awards will be exhibited at the Milk Gallery in New York from November 3 to December 9, 2017.
